Choosing the right skincare for your age

As creatures of habit, many people continue their teenage skincare routine well into adulthood, but unfortunately, it’s unlikely that the cleanser and moisturiser that worked for you when you were seventeen will continue to do your skin justice when you are pushing fifty.

As creatures of habit, many people continue their teenage skincare routine well into adulthood, but unfortunately, it’s unlikely that the cleanser and moisturiser that worked for you when you were seventeen will continue to do your skin justice when you are pushing fifty. It’s nothing personal, it’s just that your skin changes dramatically over the years and as you age your skin’s structure, type and needs alter in a way which now demands ingredients and formulas that have been scientifically developed to match your biological age.

If you’re now doubting whether your skincare is suitable for your age, the following information will hopefully help to clear things up – in more ways than one!

Skincare routine for teens

Skin is often the enemy of the average teenager and many find themselves fighting the threat of acne and shine on a daily basis. Problematic skin may be a result of fluctuating hormones, fast food, academic stress or environmental factors, and although some of these influencers may be difficult to control, skincare is one aspect that can be managed.

Out of fear of developing pimples, many teenagers stock up on products with harsh formulas that promise to fight spots, but more often than not these products end up aggravating the problem. Although ridding your skin of spots entirely may be optimistic, particularly if the cause is hormone or diet related, choosing skincare that balances skin may help calm the situation and it will certainly help combat excess shine caused by an oily complexion. Sonya Daily Skincare can be used by anyone over the age of twelve, so it’s ideal for teenagers who suffer from shiny skin. Refreshing Gel Cleanser and Refining Gel Mask are particular favourites, and since they only contain natural fragrances derived from botanicals rather than artificially added aromas, they should not irritate skin further. This skincare range also contains natural oils like cold-pressed baobab oil, and although it may be counter-intuitive to add oil to oily skin, these natural oils are best qualified at cutting through the sebum (oil) that sits on top of the skin.

Best skincare routine for your early twenties

Once you hit your twenties you expect problematic skin to be a distant memory, but unfortunately many young people aged 20-26 continue to be plagued by what could be argued as teenage skin. Skin problems in your twenties may still be brought on by hormone imbalances, but a care-free lifestyle also has a lot to answer for. Frequent partying, binge drinking and late nights that turn into all-nighters will all impact your skin, but you may not see the damage until later in life. That’s why it is essential to protect your skin in your early twenties in the hope that this will lessen any adverse effects caused.

Sonya Daily Skincare is still relevant in your early twenties, particularly as it is effective at combatting fluctuations in the skin. It’s quite likely that you still experience oily days that remind you of your teen years, but now you also have the added bonus of occasional dry patches. This skincare range is designed for combination skin just like this and works to balance the skin’s pH to give you an even complexion. The Illuminating Gel will brighten the appearance of overall skin – perfect after a late night – and Soothing Gel Moisturizer is not too heavy so won’t leave you feeling greasy after application.

It’s also wise to protect your skin with SPF in your twenties as this will help prevent premature skin-ageing. Protecting Day Lotion makes the perfect primer as it contains SPF 20 and protects against UV rays. Wearing SPF under makeup will add a layer of protection that is essential, especially if you spend a lot of time outdoors.

Anti-ageing skincare for your mid-twenties and thirties

You may notice a lot of changes in your likes, dislikes and conversation subject matters as you approach your thirties, and unsurprisingly your skin also matures along with your opinions. Collagen, a protein that occurs naturally in your body, begins to deplete by the time you hit 25. 80% of the dermis – the skin that sits underneath the outer layer of skin – is made from collagen, and it’s what helps to give your skin strength and structure. Elastin, another component of skin, is what gives skin its stretch. As you age, these structures weaken and fine lines and wrinkles form, which is why it’s essential to introduce anti-ageing products to your routine at this point in life.

Anti-ageing products often contain collagen and elastin so that you can top up the supply lost by your ageing skin, but they also contain powerful ingredients that have specifically been chosen for their ability to reduce the appearance of fine lines. Forever’s Infinite by Forever Advanced Skincare System is definitely an anti-ageing skin routine that’s worth considering by the time you hit those latter twenties. Its revolutionary formulas target the signs of ageing by adding lost moisture back into skin. The Hydrating Cleanser is full of potent ingredients that cut through dirt without drying your skin and Firming Serum is a rich moisturiser that firms skin thanks to its three-amino acid peptide formula.

As well as anti-ageing, now is the time to add a regular exfoliator to your collection. When you’re young, your skin naturally exfoliates every 28 days but by your thirties this drops considerably. Smoothing Exfoliator will help to remove dead and dry skin to smooth your complexion without harming the environment. Its gentle formula uses natural jojoba beads and bamboo powder, so you don’t need to worry about harmful plastics entering the environment!

Anti-ageing skincare for your fab forties and onwards

By the time you hit your forties, you’ll want to make sure you have an established anti-ageing regime underway. Infinite by Forever Restoring Crème is an absolute must and should be used alongside the Firming Serum. This rich cream contains vitamin B3 to help even skin tone, but its unique formula also works as a barrier to protect the skin from further damage that may cause ageing. Its moisturising properties replenish parched skin and since dry skin is at risk of developing wrinkles, moisturising products are something you want your skin to befriend.

You may have gathered by now that preventing ageing skin often requires you adding something back into the skin, so if you want to up your skincare game, you may want to consider tackling skin ageing from the inside out. Beauty supplements are the perfect way to condition skin from within and Forever’s Firming Complex combines vitamin C with biotin and marine collagen to deliver effective ingredients to where your skin needs it most. Vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of skin, biotin contributes to the maintenance of normal skin and collagen helps give skin its structure and tone.

If you haven’t introduced an eye cream to your skincare routine already, now is the time to treat your tired eyes. Awakening Eye Cream firms under-eye skin, and reduces the appearance of dark circles and crow’s feet to keep your eyes from giving away your age.
